Course Overview
This two day course is designed for the clinician who will be treating pregnant and postpartum patients and for the clinician interested in expanding her/his practice to include this population with evidence based treatment techniques.
Anatomical and physiological changes of the pregnant and postpartum woman will be covered. Specific dysfunctions of carpal tunnel, thoracic outlet, rib pain, diastasis recti, ostitis pubis, pubic, sacroiliac and coccyx joint problems, foot and back pain will be discussed with evaluation and treatment methods practiced in lab.
The course is designed for practical application with patients the next day. There are no prerequisites for this course.
Objectives
Upon completion of this seminar, participants will be able to:
- Describe the major hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy.
- Describe the circulatory and respiratory changes that occur during pregnancy.
- Describe the musculoskeletal changes that occur during pregnancy.
- Describe the stages of labor and delivery and how physical therapy can assist.
- Describe the common spinal, pelvic and foot dysfunctions that occur during pregnancy and treatment techniques appropriate for the dysfunctions.
- Describe the affects of exercise on the fetus and the accepted exercise guidelines.
- Describe a cesarean section and the treatment techniques appropriate for rehabilitation.
- Define high risk pregnancy and the controversies of bed rest.
- Define the postpartum period.
- Describe the controversies of an episiotomy.
- Demonstrate use of a portable SEMG unit for labor and delivery.
Audience
Course content is targeted to physical therapists. Content is not intended for use outside the scope of the learner's license or regulation. Clinical continuing education should not be taken by individuals who are not licensed or otherwise regulated; except as they are involved in a specific plan of care.

Day 1: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Day 2: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Certificates
All participants completing the seminar will receive a certificate of attendance with continuing education contact hours and a checklist of skills learned for examination and treatment in the seminar labs. Participants electing to take a post test multiple choice examination (70% passing required) will also receive a didactic learning certificate.
