Frequently asked questions about courses:
Registering for Courses:
- How do I know if the course is full?
- If the course is listed on our website, it means we still have space available. Once a course is full, we remove the registration link from the site. It is not necessary to call and confirm that a course is still open if it appears on the website.
- How may I pay for my course registration?
- We accept Visa and Mastercard. Registrants may also pay by check, which can be mailed to the PO Box address listed on the registration form. Unfortunately, we are unable to take American Express or money orders.
- I’m concerned about putting my credit card info on a fax. What should I do?
- Many people feel apprehensive about sending financial information via fax. However, our machine does not transmit paper copies. Rather, the fax becomes a scanned electronic document that is emailed directly to the private inbox of the administrator that processes registration forms. No paper copy is sent through any machine.
- Is there a waiting list for courses that are full?
- Yes. It is not uncommon for participants to cancel their registrations due to sudden illness, family emergency, or other unseen life events. We are happy to keep your name on the wait list if the course is full, in the hopes that a space may become available.
- How do I find information about pre-requisites?
- This information is right on our website. Simply click the link to the course in which you are interested, and information regarding pre-reqs, pre-reading, and the course schedule and overview will all be listed there.
- How do I get information about hotel suggestions, driving directions, parking at the course, and other logistics?
- This information will be in your confirmation letter. Once we process your registration form, we will both email and snail mail you your confirmation letter. The letter will contain the exact start and stop times of the course, directions to the course site and all other pertinent travel and lodging information. Although we try and negotiate group discounts, arrange shuttles, or at least find hotels to reccommend for all our courses, please understand that this is not always possible. In the case that we are unable to make a hotel suggestion, we recommend using hotels.com or a similar site. We are always happy to help you to the best of our ability
CEUs:
- How do I find information regarding CEUs?
- The Continuing Education Unit is a standard unit of measure to quantify adult continuing education. All courses from the Institute count for contact hours of continuing education. At the end of each course, all participants will be awarded a certificate stating the number of contact hours earned by completing the course. It is the responsiblity of the participant to determine to what those contact hours translate based on their state's individual state rules and requirements. This means that, to find out how CEUs will be awarded for a given course, participants should check with their state chapter of the APTA. To find out the number of contact hours each course contains, please refer to the course page on our website.
Discounts:
- Do we offer a Student Discount?
- Yes. We extend a 10% discount off the registration for each course to students enrolled in a PT program at an accredited institution. This discount applies only to non-licensed, non-matriculated students currently working towards their PT license. This discount does not extend to doctoral students or other already-licensed PTs seeking additional degrees. To receive this discount, please fax or email in your registration form with a note on the cover sheet/ in the email indicating that you are elligible to recveie our student discount. Further proof of enrollment may be requested by the Institute.
- Do we offer a discount for a group of participants from the same clinic/ facility?
- Yes. We offer a 10% discount for three or more participants from the same site. For six or more participants, we will offer 15% off each registration. For 10 or more, we will take 20% off each registration. We will ONLY extend this discount to registrations that are faxed all at once with a single cover sheet. A notation should be made on the cover sheet lisitng the number of registrants and the name of the facility. It is not possible to receive this discount if registrants send in their forms at different times.
- I would like to re-take a coures I have taken previously. Can I receive a discount on my registration?
- If you have already taken a Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute course but wish to “brush up” on the material by taking the same course again, we will extend $100 off your registration. Please understand that this discount only extends to those courses in which registration fees are collected by the Institute, not those sponsored by the Prometheus Group or other outside sponsors. In order to qualify for this discount, the registrant must be able to identify which course event he/ she previously attended. Registrants applying for this discount should also be prepared to present evidence of their attendance in the form of a certificate, etc. from the previously-attended course event. There are a limited number of slots for “re-takes” per course.
Participation:
- Who Can Take an H&W Course?
- Herman & Wallace continuing education courses are, first and foremost, intended for physical therapists. However, as we at the Institute see ourselves as a resource for health care practitioners and patients, exceptions have been made to include other professionals in our courses, in keeping with our commitment to spreading knowledge of pelvic floor health to new audiences. The following are also welcome to take our courses: Physical Therapy Assistants, Registered Nurses, MDs, Occupational Therapists and anyone else who is "licensed to touch"
- What is our policy on participants that are pregnant or have other medical concerns that may prevent them from participating in labs?
- Pregnancy policy: We do not recommend that partcipants be evaluated or act as a model for internal examinations if they are pregnant or have other medical conditions that limit examinations or vaginal penetration. To insure your participation is not medically contraindicated or high-risk, we require a doctor or midwife approval letter if you are pregnant and wish to fully participate. Please keep in mind that you will be evaluated by students who have never before performed these examinations. A release of liability for the lab and a medical release note (approval letter from your OB/GYN on rx form or stationary) will, therefore, be required for internal lab participation. Another option is for participants to bring a lab “stand in” - someone who would potentially be evaluated by anyone in the course. The stand-in model should realize that she is not coming to be evaluated solely by the participant she accompanies. The lab schedule will be issued to those who bring a stand- in models, as models will be allowed in the course only during labs do not attend the entire class. We realize it may be difficult to find someone to act as a model. Because we want and encourage participation in our courses, we are willing to help registrants that are pregnant or have medical concerns find an option that will allow them to maximize their continuing education experience with the Institute. Please contact the Institute if you need assistance making arrangements.
- What is our Policy on men participating in courses that include internal lab work?
- Male participants, though they are rare, have participated in our courses and are welcome to do so, provided they observe our policies. A female model for PF examination training is required for all the Pelvic Floor series, except PF 2A. (Female models are also not required for Male Pelvic Floor). Male participants may only evaluate the female model that they themselves bring to the course. This means that, in order for male registrants to fully participate in lab work, they must bring their own female model. Course participants are not obligated to be a lab model for a male participant unless they volunteer to do so. Further, participants can request that male participants be designated a specific location in the lab room.
Bringing a Model:
- When is one required to bring a model to the course?
- For those participants who are pregnant, have medical concerns regarding participating in internal labs, and male participants, it is advised that you bring a model to the course to complete those lab sections that include internal evaluation and techniques. As stated above, we at the Institute do not want pregnancy or medical conditions to bar anyone from participating in our courses, or from having an optimal course experience. We will gladly assist any of our registrants in finding options that work for them.
- Who is permitted to act as a model?
- In the past, some registrants have inquired as to whether they may bring patients to act as models, particularly in the Male PF course. This practice, however, is not permissible. The liability insurance held by our instructors for these courses licenses them to teach, not treat during course times. It is, therefore, an uninsured liability to have patients act as models during course labs.
- Will there be Male models for the labs in the Male Pelvic Floor course?
- At this time, we do not have male models during labs in this course. In previous classes we have been fortunate to have male participants who have been gracious models, though this is at the discretion of the male participant and is by no means a certainty. The course also includes video footage of assessment and treatment of the male patient. Female participants to this course are welcome to bring a partner or other male during lab times if they are interested - provided that this individual IS NOT a patient.
At the Course:
- I have never taken an H&W Pelvic Floor series course before. What can I expect in courses that include internal lab work?
- Participants in PF 1 will be trained to perform pelvic floor muscle examinations on female course participants. Participants will be asked to be "models" and evaluators. After an introduction to pelvic floor anatomy, the rationale, indications and contraindications of internal examination will be reviewed. Examination training will take place in a large open room with an instructor to participant ratio of 1:10. There are 4 internal PF labs. A pelvic floor exam includes external genitalia identification, palpation externally of pelvic floor muscles and surface anatomy, digital vaginal palpation of the pelvic floor muscles and pelvic floor muscle testing/pelvic prolapse evaluations. If you do not participate in the class as a model you will be part of a group of three participants rather than two and may not have the opportunity to complete all of the lab activities, though you can watch. The lab time is allocated for groups of 2 so there may be little time for a third in the group to learn all the techniques instructed.
- I would like to save money on my hotel room by sharing a room with someone else in the course. How can I contact them?
- If you would like the contact list for a course you are registered to take, please email admin@pelvicrehab.com with this request. We are happy to forward the roster contact list to you so that you may make inquiries regarding car pooling, rooming together, etc.
