Makela is a Pelvic Floor and Orthopedic Physical Therapist (Hunter College), a Nationally Certified Pilates Teacher and a Pregnancy and Postpartum Corrective Exercise Specialist. She is a strong believer that “movement is medicine” and collaborates with patients to meet both functional and aspirational goals and to foster a sense of resilience. Makela's approach to treatment incorporates manual therapy (including soft-tissue massage, myofascial release and visceral mobilization), Pilates-based and functional exercise, mind-body awareness and breathwork. Makela is passionate about pelvic rehab, and believes it should be a more integral, accessible and normalized part of our healthcare. She embraces a multidisciplinary approach and works with other health and wellness professionals to provide integrated care that appreciates the whole person.
