Mary Margaret (Mara) Towne
Physical Therapy Specialists
Mara's path to becoming a pelvic health physical therapist began when she graduated from CSU with a bachelor’s degree in Biology and a minor in Bio-Medical Sciences. After graduation, Mara studied massage therapy in Eugene, Oregon, where she became a licensed massage therapist. Working as a massage therapist greatly enhanced her manual therapy skills. However, Mara wanted to incorporate both manual therapy and exercise to help patients decrease pain and dysfunction. After being a massage therapist for several years she went to physical therapy school at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Center where she received her Doctorate in Physical Therapy. During her PT education, Mara began specializing in pelvic health. In her second year of physical therapy school, she was awarded a scholarship to attend the American Physical Therapy Association’s (APTA) Combined Sections Meeting (CSM) through the Section on Women’s Health. After attending this meeting, she became very active in the Section on Women’s Health and was the Program Coordinator for the Student Special Interest Group. The following year she moderated the CSM lecture “What does a Women’s Health Physical Therapist Really Do?” Additionally, one of her final clinical rotations in PT school was in pelvic health. She also received a scholarship from the APTA Colorado Chapter to attend their spring conference in her final term of PT school. Prior to joining the Physical Therapy Specialists team she developed the Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Program at Denver Health Hospital and spoke at Grand Rounds lecturing to primary care physicians about pelvic health physical therapy. In addition to pelvic health physical therapy, Mara specializes in TMJ dysfunction and orthopedic manual therapy. She is passionate about individualizing her treatment plans and helping patients get back to doing what’s most important for them. Mara cultivates open communication and wants her patients to be comfortable asking her any questions they may have. She loves living in Centennial with her husband Dylan, their twin daughter and son and their two dogs, Nina and Winston.
